Award-winning Moscatel mosto in Jerez: a taste of El Puerto

Albariza de la Torre’s dry Moscatel de Alejandría mosto has won first prize at the XII Mosto Competition organised by the Jerez Regulatory Council. For our family winery, the celebration begins in the vineyard: with the work behind each harvest and the choice to express this aromatic grape as a dry wine.

As El Puerto al Minuto reported, the grapes were grown at Viña La Torre in El Puerto de Santa María. The story also opens a door to a side of Cádiz wine worth discovering at the table.

An award rooted in El Puerto de Santa María

Manuel Galán Leal received the award on 23 January 2026 at Bodega San Ginés. El Puerto Actualidad covered the presentation and its connection with our home town.

Our own roots lie in a family farming history that began in 1893. Today, we work in Pago de Balbaína, between El Puerto and Jerez, with the vineyard at the heart of our wines.

What does mosto mean in Jerez?

Locally, mosto means the young wine of the harvest after fermentation. This usage explains what the competition celebrates: newly made wine. The Regulatory Council describes the tradition in its account of winemaking in Jerez.

Can Moscatel be a dry wine?

Yes. Moscatel is a grape variety; the wine’s style depends on how it is made. Its aromatic character can shine in a dry white. Read the bottle’s tasting notes when choosing: floral and fruity aromas can accompany a dry palate and refreshing acidity.

Explore Diecisiete Once dry Moscatel

To discover another expression of the variety, our shop offers Diecisiete Once Moscatel sobre lías, a dry white with its own winemaking approach. Controlled fermentation preserves its aromas; ageing on fine lees with regular bâtonnage adds body and a creamy texture.

Its tasting notes combine orange blossom and jasmine with citrus and stone fruit, alongside subtle bakery and nut aromas. On the palate, freshness and a generous texture lead to a clean finish with a delicate saline touch.

Pairing ideas

  • Sushi and sashimi: particularly tuna or salmon, whose richness works with the wine’s acidity and texture.
  • Shellfish: oysters, clams and scallops complement its saline character.
  • White fish: grilled or oven-baked, to enjoy its body and freshness together.
